M-24 (Lapeer Road) reconstruction schedule changes

COUNTY:

Lapeer

HIGHWAY:

M-24

CLOSEST CITY:

Lapeer

PROJECT DETAILS:

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), in cooperation with city officials and community stakeholders, is revising the schedule for the M-24 (Lapeer Road) reconstruction project in Lapeer. Staging changes are being made to avoid extending the traffic detours into the 2014 school year.

The overall project includes reconstructing 2 miles of M-24 from south of I-69 to Nepessing Street in the city of Lapeer and Lapeer Township. Work, which began in late April, is expected to be completed in mid-September 2015.

In addition to road construction, the $17.5 million project also includes:

  • storm and sanitary sewer,
  • water main and hydrants,
  • sidewalk and signal upgrades,
  • curb and gutter replacement,
  • shoulder improvements,
  • constructing a non-motorized path from Turrill Road to Tower Street,
  • replacing the M-24 culvert over Farmers Creek, and
  • installing a new lighted pedestrian tunnel.

All side street approaches within these limits will be included in the reconstruction.

Access to all businesses will be maintained for the duration of this project.

TRAFFIC IMPACT:

The original construction schedule called for M-24 reconstruction from Tower Road north to Nepessing Street in 2014, with work from Tower Road south to I-69 scheduled in 2015. The schedule has been revised:

– M-24 will be reconstructed from I-69 to Demille Road in 2014,

– M-24 will be reconstructed from Demille Road to Nepessing Street in 2015, and

– Farmers Creek Bridge will be replaced in 2015, with traffic detoured from July 8 to Aug. 23, 2015

Frost Laws & Road Construction Updates

The Lapeer County Road Commission will be lifting frost law on Friday, April 25th at 12:01am.

From MDOT:

3724984879_cb82013f9bBeginning this week on Tuesday 4/22/14 there will be intermittent “rolling” lane closures doing pot hole patching on M-24 between Neppessing and I-69.  Additionally, there will be traffic signal work and lane closure set up.  Starting Thursday traffic will be shifted to the south bound side of M-24 one lane in each direction between DeMille and Tower Street.

You will see some intermittent lane closures starting tomorrow on M-24.  They will also be setting up the first phase of construction.  This will shift traffic to the southbound side of M-24 with one lane in each direction on the western lanes of M-24.  This shift will be from about Tower Street to DeMille.

Here is the MDOT brochure regarding the M-24 Reconstruction project.

Road Work Updates

9069965-largeA note from the Michigan Department of Transportation:

Last year we replaced the bridge over the abandon railroad north of town or just south of Davis Lake Road. The final work on the project will be to complete the final asphalt paving which will start next week 5/20, weather permitting.

To complete this work we will keep a lane open in each direction by shifting traffic onto the shoulder or into the left turn lane.

You may have a slight delay through the area but traffic should be able to move fairly well. The work will take between 3 and 4 days to complete if mother nature cooperates.

We also learned that the road work for M-24 from W Genesee St to I-69 has been pushed off until 2014.

A note from the Lapeer County Road Commission:

Millville at McKeen Road work will start on Monday. There will be a full detour set up (Bronson Lake to Klam to Marathon to Peters).
Buses will be able to get through on Monday and Tuesday, but probably not on Wednesday. We will try to keep them informed ahead of time when they will be able to get through. The project should hopefully be open to traffic again in about 3-4 weeks.

Clark at Turrill Road work will start on Monday. There will be a full detour set up (Turrill to M-24 to Newark). The road project will be completely north of Higley, but there may be guardrail or tree work happening to the south of Higley occasionally.
Buses will be able to get through on Monday and Tuesday, but probably not on Wednesday. We will try to keep them informed ahead of time when they will be able to get through. The project should hopefully be open to traffic again in about 3-4 weeks.

Project Update on the M-24 Bridge Project

On Monday June 4, 2012 MDOT will be starting on the bridge replacement on M-24 over Plum Creek.  Preliminary work will be performed on Monday and on Tuesday June 7; the temporary signals will be energized for the upcoming bridge work.  The completion date for this work is late October 2012.

This bridge is approximately 1.5 miles north of Davis Lake Road.

Traffic Update on M-24 over the Railroad Bridge

Starting at 8:00 pm tonight (Tuesday May 15, 2012) MDOT will be setting a temporary concrete barrier wall on M-24 over the Railroad Bridge.  This work should be completed by 5:00 am Wednesday May 16, 2012.

In order to set the temporary concrete wall, “MDOT will have to maintain one lane of traffic for both directions” using flag control.

MDOT Bridge work on M24 Starts Today

On Monday April 30, the bridge replacement project over the abandoned railroad will start just north of Lapeer on M-24. Throughout the life of the project, MDOT will maintain two (2) lanes during the daytime.  MDOT may have intermittent night time construction operations and at that time traffic will be maintained using flag control.  When this occurs, additional updates will be sent out.

Between May 3rd and May 8th, on M-24 over the railroad bridge, the traffic lanes will be shifted but will still maintain two lanes (one in each direction).

There are portable changeable message boards running informing the public of these upcoming projects.
