On Thursday 09-26-2013 at 12:37 AM, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an injury traffic crash on Columbiaville Road to the east of North Lake Road in Columbiaville.
TRISH WHITE age 33 from Columbiaville was traveling east on Columbiaville Road operating a 1998 Cadillac. WHITE failed to navigate a curve and departed the south side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled a negative embankment before striking a tree.
WHITE was the lone occupant. WHITE was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Columbiaville Fire Department and Marathon Township First Responders. The roadway was closed for about 2 1/2 hour for investigative purposes.
Preliminary investigation supports that excessive speed and alcohol are contributing factors.

On Friday 10-26-2012 at 10:56 AM, Lapeer County Sheriffs Deputies responded to an injury traffic crash involving a passenger car and semi on Van Dyke (M-53) south of Bowers Road in Imlay City (Imlay Township).
Lapeer County Sheriffs Deputy William Osborne arrived at 10:58 AM. A fire erupted within the occupied passenger car and unoccupied semi tractor. The fierce fire could not be contained by Deputy Osborne and Imlay City Police Officer Joe Deluca prior to Imlay City Fire and Rescue arriving. The driver and lone occupant of the passenger vehicle ERIC EASTERLING was pronounced deceased at the scene.
EASTERLING was traveling north on Van Dyke operating a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. EASTERLING approached a vehicle traveling in the same direction that was slowing/stopping upon the roadway preparing for a left turn. EASTERLING passed the turning vehicle on the right traveling upon the gravel roadway shoulder. Upon reentering the traveled portion of the roadway, EASTERLING lost control and his vehicle entered a counter-clockwise rotation.
EASTERLING’S vehicle crossed the centerline into the south bound lane in front of a 1999 Volvo Semi operated by RONALD HAAG age 53 from Minden City. The collision was broadside with the front of the semi contacting the passenger side of the car. Vehicles remained attached and entered the west side ditch coming to rest. HAAG exited his tractor before the fire erupted. HAGG was not injured and declined medical treatment.
The Lapeer County Sheriff s Office was assisted at the scene by Imlay City Police Department, Michigan State Police Troopers and Motor Carriers, Goodland Township Fire, Imlay City Fire and Rescue, and Young’s Environmental Service. Van Dyke was reopened for normal vehicular traffic around 2:30 PM.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in this fatal traffic crash which remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff s Office.
On Friday 05-25-2012 at 11:04 AM, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an injury traffic crash on Lake Pleasant Road south of Lum Road in Attica (Arcadia Township).
Alice McCoy age 69 from Imlay City was traveling south on Lake Pleasant Road driving a 2011 Dodge Avenger. McCoy crested a hill approaching another southbound vehicle that was traveling below the posted 55 MPH speed limit.
McCoy’s swerved to the left but contacted the rear driver’s corner of a 2010 GMC Terrain driven by Nancy Schodowski age 67 from Attica. McCoy continued across the center line and collided head on with a northbound 2004 Buick LeSabre driven by Robbert Ferguson age 45 from Attica.
McCoy was wearing her seat belt with her vehicle’s airbags deploying. CPR was administered on McCoy while she was transported to McLaren- Lapeer Region. McCoy died of injuries sustained upon arrival at McLaren- Lapeer Region.
Ferguson was transported to McLaren- Lapeer Region for non-life threatening injuries.
Schodowski declined medical treatment at the scene.
Preliminary investigation supports that neither alcohol nor excessive speed are a factor in this traffic crash. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police- Lapeer Regional Post.
Lake Pleasant Road was closed or partially restricted for approximately 2 ½ hours for rescue and investigative purposes. This traffic crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sunday 05-20-2012 at 2:12 PM, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Hunt Road west of Lake Nepessing Road in Lapeer (Elba Township) for an injury traffic crash.
ANITA KUNZ age 70 from Lapeer was the driver and lone occupant of her Buick Roadmaster. KUNZ departed her residence and traveled east on Hunt Road. Within a few tenths of a mile from her residence, KUNZ crossed over the center line and departed the north side of the roadway striking a mailbox before entering a shallow ditch. KUNZ’S vehicle came to rest within the ditch.
KUNZ was unresponsive at the scene and life saving effort was initiated. KUNZ was transported to McLaren- Lapeer Region where her death was pronounced within the emergency department.
Preliminary investigation supports that neither drugs nor alcohol are factors. Excessive speed (posted speed limit of 25 MPH) is not a factor. Lapeer County Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Franckowiak is investigating to determine if KUNZ was experiencing medical distress and this condition resulted in her death.
Hunt Road traffic was restricted for approximately 1 3⁄4 hours for rescue and investigative purposes. Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by the City of Lapeer Police Department and Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service. The crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.
