On Friday 12-20-2013, Lapeer County Sheriff Ron Kalanquin awarded Deputy Craig Ross the honor of 2013 Deputy of the Year. This was done during a luncheon attended by Sheriff’s Officials, a Lapeer County Commissioners, and Deputy Ross’ family.
On Tuesday 10-15-2013 at 1:49 AM, Deputy Ross responded to an injury traffic crash on N. Lapeer Road near Swaffer Road in Mayville (Lapeer County’s Rich Township). It was reported that an occupied vehicle rolled over into a ditch and caught on fire.
Deputy Craig Ross was the first to arrive. The driver (lone occupant) was unable to exit his pick up truck. Deputy Ross broke out the vehicle’s windows and freed the driver from the wreckage while fire was consuming the occupant compartment. A few moments later, the vehicle exploded and became fully engulfed with fire.
Sheriff Kalanquin commended Deputy Ross’ courage, integrity, and quick action. A tragic outcome was avoided because of his heroic action. Deputy Ross commended the assistance he received from civilian by-passer Valerie Czaczkowski age 26 from North Branch during this rescue.
The driver, a 43 year old male from Saginaw, sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention. Alcohol was deemed a contributing factor in this traffic crash.
