Press Release: Suicidal Subject / Traffic Crash Involving Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputy

On Monday 04-30-2012 around 3:45 PM,   Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the land owned by the State ofMichigan(commonly referred to as the State Game Area) offNorway Lake Roadto the west ofN. Lapeer RoadinMayfieldTownshipfor a suicidal individual in possession of a weapon.  The subject, a 39 year old Deerfield Twp. resident had been located by a citizen in the State Game Area with the cars exhaust hose through a back window of the car.  The lone occupant was also in possession of a 12 gauge shotgun.  The citizen pulled the exhaust hose from the car and then contacted central dispatch.

Deputies approached the car attempting to deescalate the subject, found the auto unoccupied, shortly there after a gun shot was heard in the forest behind where the deputies were located.  The 39 year oldDeerfieldresident who had already shot himself in the chest prior to the Sheriff’s Department arrival, had shot himself a second time on the left side of his face.

The subject was transported to McLaren-Lapeer Regional where he was stabilized and later transferred to U of M Hospitals inAnn Arborin critical condition.

As this was occurring, Deputy Craig Ross ( age 42/ 5 years with department) responded operating a full marked patrol unit with the emergency lights and siren activated.   Deputy Ross was traveling south onN. Lapeer Roadwith vehicles traveling in both directions properly yielding.

KRYSTLE BARRINGER age 28 from North Branch was operating a 1999 Buick LeSabre north onN. Lapeer Road.   BARRINGER was south of theColumbiaville Roadintersection when she slowed and maneuvering to the right shoulder to yield right away for Deputy Ross.

LEVI YACHESON age 20 from Dryden was traveling north directly behind BARRINGER operating a 1994 Ford Ranger truck.   YACHESON stated that he observed the patrol unit traveling south with the emergency lights and siren activated.   YACHESON stated that BARRINGER slowed quickly in front of him.

YACHESON struck the back of BARRINGER’S vehicle before crossing over the center line and striking the driver’s side of the patrol unit driven by Deputy Ross.   Deputy Ross subsequently departed the west side of the roadway coming to rest within the ditch.

Neither BARRINGER nor her two passengers (DENNIS CLARK age 32 from North Branch and BRIANNA CLARK age 5) were injured.   YACHESON was not injured in this traffic crash.

Deputy Ross sustained minor injuries and was transported to McLaren- Lapeer Region.  Deputy Ross was released from McLaren a few hours following the crash.

Alcohol is not a factor in this traffic crash that remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.  N. Lapeer Roadwas closed for approximately 1 ½ hours for rescue and investigative purposes.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Michigan State Police-Lapeer Post and the Lapeer Area Ambulance Service.
